A bright light. Yes, that’s what I saw, a bright light. A silver orb hovering over my head, several meters away, surrounded only by darkness. The air was crisp. The ground, which I stood on, was damp.
I felt cold and lonely, but I could see someone standing only a few feet away. I couldn’t make out who he was, but yet, somehow, I knew him. The darkness shaded him from my eyes, but something stood out. He was holding something, something metal. Suddenly, a sound shattered the silence. A sound like a roaring river.
My body jolted awake in my bed. I was breathing hard. My bare chest was damp with sweat.
A dream, I thought to myself, just a dream. A horrible nightmare. I rubbed my hands through the light brown jungle growing on my head. I felt uneasy.
What did it all mean? Nothing probably, but still, there was something strange about it. I pondered on this for awhile. Asking myself more and more questions, but coming up with few answers.
Finally I decided it was time to forget about it, at least for the moment. Besides, it was time to get the morning started. It was only a dream after all. I ripped the covers off, exposing my half naked body. I clumsily got out of bed and picked up a white T-shirt and a pair of blue jeans off the floor. I quickly dressed and grabbed my orange backpack before heading downstairs.
I live in a small house with just me, my grandma, and Ariel, my dog. But every October and a couple of weeks during the summer, my uncle will come and stay with us.
My parents died in a car crash when I was young. I don’t know much about them. People don’t really mention stories about them.
The house has three bedrooms, a living room, three bathrooms, and the kitchen slash dining room, the biggest room in the house. You can almost always smell the aroma of something sweet cooking, especially during this time of year.
It’s nearing Halloween, one of my favorite times of the year. Every year, me and my best friend, Willie, will have a monster bash and watch scary movies. They’re not scary anymore, since we’re teenagers now. My uncle even makes a special green drink for the occasion, thou, I don’t remember much after I drink it. Everything’s kind of a blur.
When I reached the bottom of the stairs I could hear the clanking of pots and pans as my grandma busied herself in the kitchen. I could already smell the eggs and bacon as they sizzled in the skillet.
As I entered the kitchen, I saw the old woman bending over at the oven, retrieving a fresh batch of her famous, Halloween cookies. She’s a round plump lady who always has a smile on her face, but don’t let that fool you, she can be harsh when she wants to be. She also has a bad habit of twirling her finger in her faded white hair when she talks. Her spectacles usually hang at the end of her nose. Even with them on, she still squints her ocean blue eyes when she reads.
Even thou she has aged greatly, her spirit hasn’t. She likes to help others when ever she gets a chance. That’s one of the reasons she became a nurse.
“Morning Grandma,” I said casually, as I sat my backpack on the counter.
“Morning Silver,” she replied as she stuffed the cookies into a basket.
Yes, my names Silver. Well actually, technically it’s not. My real name is Jason. Willie was the first to call me Silver, and it caught on from there. Thou, I’m not sure if it was because of my eyes or the white stripe in my hair.
“I’ve got to get to work early today honey,” she chimed. “Do you need anything before I leave?”
“No, I’m fine, thanks thou.”
She grasped the basket handle before embracing me in a hug. I kissed her on the cheek and she was off.
Ariel ran into the room as the door creaked shut. She studied it for a moment before she made herself comfortable on the kitchen floor. Ariel, also known as Aries by Willie, is a beautiful dog. Her hair is white like snowflakes, and she also possesses grass green eyes. She’s a mutt. Her mother was a white wolf and her father was a Siberian husky. I got her as a birthday present for my second birthday.
I patted her on the head before walking over to the stove and continued on the breakfast my grandma started. There were already two plates sitting out close by. She usually makes extras since Willie comes almost every morning.
I waited till the eggs were golden before tossing them on the plates. The bacon took a little longer to cook, but not much. In no time breakfast was ready. I balanced one plate in each hand until I reached the wooden, round table.
As I sat down, I heard the door squeal as Will slammed it open, dashing into the house. I only got a glimpse of him before he sat down in the seat beside me and began stuffing his face. His dark brown hair looked like it had just been combed, but knowing Willie, he’d probably hadn’t in a couple of days. His hair always stays down, except for a cowlick on the back of his head. He’s also a good couple of inches taller then me, and a day like today, his hazel eyes twinkle when he has a secret he’s dying to tell.
“What’s going on bud?’ I asked as I stuffed a piece of crispy bacon in my mouth.
A big sheepish grin spread across his face before he answered. “Well, what would you say if I told you I could get you a girl for the school dance on Halloween night?”
“Sure, but what about our monster bash?”
“Listen I’ve got it all planned out. We go to your house after school; watch scary movies till nine, that’s when the starts anyways, meet our dates somewhere, and spend the rest of the night dancing away.”
“That sounds great, but who did you have in mind?”
“There is that one girl in Algebra, you know the one with glasses,” he said with a smile.
“Will.”
“Or, there is Sam from the color guard.”
“What!” I exclaimed. “You’re joking right?”
“Nope.”
“Then how did you do it?”
“I’ve got connections.”
“No, really, how did you do it?”
“Well, you know my girlfriend, Tabi?”
“Yeah?”
“Well, I kinda mentioned to her that you liked Sam and she worked her magic. It turned out that she like you too.”
“I don’t know if I should thank you or punch you.”
“Personally, I think you should thank me. I just saved your butt from standing in the very back corner drinking punch the whole time.”
“Well,” chuckle, “I guess so. We better go ahead and leave. We don’t want Tabi to wait for her love bug forever.”
“Ha, ha very funny.”
We both left the table. I grabbed my backpack as we raced out the door. I don’t live that far from school and Willie doesn’t either, since he’s my neighbor. Yeah, it’s awesome having your best friend as a neighbor.
We found our friends in the band room, they were laughing as we arrived. Apparently Sam had said something funny again. Willie kissed Tabi as he took her hands, swinging them back and forth. I think they make a great couple, but I’ve never told Will that.
“Can’t you wait for the dance?” I asked Sam.
“No, I can’t” she replied, jumping up and down. “It’s going to be so much fun!”
“Hey,” said Tabi “don’t get too excited.”
Tabi’s lots of fun, but she gets a little annoyed when Sam gets over excited, since she doesn’t sit still. Tabi has dark brown and brown eyes. I’m taller then her, but I’ve never rubbed it in, unlike Willie before they started dating.
Sammie, on the other hand, has light brown hair and hazel eyes. She’s about the same size as me, but I’m still taller. She’s taught me a few moves with the colorguard flags. I’m not to great, but I’ve been slowly improving.
“Hey Willie?” asked Tabi. “Have you read the newspaper yet?”
“No, why?”
“There’s an article that almost everyone at school been talking about.”
Tabi handed the paper to Will. I moved over for I could read it too.
Last Halloween a man by the name of Matthew Idis was killed. It
seemed as in fact that he had been attacked by a wild animal. There were
bite marks in the man’s throat and his face had been torn to shreds. However,
they’re no signs of a big creature like this living in these parts.
There were no eye witness of the attack. Some fellow trick or treaters
found the body in the park while returning home. Few people believe that this
was in fact a werewolf attack. There hasn’t been any evidence to support this
idea, but yet again, anything’s possible on Halloween.
I finished the article before Willie did. It was interesting that they didn’t know the cause of the death, but I thought it was a nice touch mentioning the werewolf, it helps get everyone in the Halloween spirit.
