Hi all. You might have noticed that the Top 20 is no longer there. We removed it because it was causing the site to crash. We had to decide whether or not to spend the resources to fix it or just take it off. We decided to take it off because in our mind it's become redundant. The site now has a Popularity index for every type (Novel, Short Story, Poem, etc.) and genre (sci-fi, fantasy, romance) that is in essence a better Top 20. So it made more sense to use the resources to fix some other bugs and roll out some new features. For example, based on your feedback we realize there is a problem with the Random First Line (it only shows Romance) and will be fixing that. We'll also be adding the ability to search for specific authors on the Writers tab. You'll see some of the new features shortly.

Of course, we welcome your feedback on this change. You can also listen to me explain what's going on but go easy :).

ADDITIONAL FEATURED WRITING NOTE: It has come to my attention that the developers may have inadvertantly knocked out your Featured Writing preferences as part of their coding. I'm asking them to restore it but the easiest thing to do is go to Publish and turn on Featured Writing for those works that you want featured on your Booksie page.

There may also be a few bugs over the next couple of days as we make changes to handle all of the new writers on the site and improve performance.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

- BG

May i be the first person to read this and say, thankyou.
You have heard what we have said, thankyou so much. And yeah i was kind of stunned when i realized the top 20 had disappeared. But i wasnt complaining after i heard the reasoning. I was always getting shut out and having my visits interrupted. So im glad that was solved.
Looking forward to the new features and glad to hear the mighty voice of the Booksieguy!

Thanks Lionheart. The performance issues might not be entirely solved yet - but this is a big step. The site has grown so much in the last couple of months it's been a challenge keeping up, but we're almost there. Thanks for everyone's patience.

We're really excited to be rolling out the new features so stay tuned.

BG

makes sense to me. the top 20 was mostly overrun with erotica anyway. nothing against erotica but i can just go to the erotica section if i want to read it.

Posted: Jul 8, 2008

Just a comment. The Featured Writing section will be back up shortly. We're just tweaking some of the site's featured to improve performance. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I am not really fond of the whole "ranking" thing. As stated above, it was erotica that flooded the Top 20. Nothing much I want to read there. Since I'm more of a fantasy guy, I always stick to the fantasy section, which kinda drove me away from the Top 20, mainly because it was the same erotica stuff. So I really am sorta relieved its gone. As long as I can get on here fine, I'm cool with whatever you do.

Ha!I was just thinking, "hey, where'd it go?" then i saw the note...haha. That's good. I'm especially excited about the 'Random First Line' deal. Cool. Thanks Booksie Guy!

Oh my god, thanks! I hated it when the website was all slow and crashing and stuff o.O Hope the problem is fixed now :)

Posted: Jul 9, 2008

Hello Booksie Guy...

You probably already know but the "read" tabulation is NOT working and in turn, wouldn't this affect 'Featured Writing'? The reads on this posting is '0'...

Also, I think you need to come up with something more substantial to features 'New Writing' submissions. I was using the 'top 20' for this purpose.. to discover the newer postings but now ??????

And the featured writing... are these selections determined ONLY by popularity or most number of reads! If so... that still only makes it a popularity contest not based on the quality of the work.

Oh well... just some thoughts of mine. Thanks for listening.....Jerry (^_^)

Posted: Jul 9, 2008

Author Comment:

The Read tabulation isn't showing but it is working. In terms of discovering New writing, each section has a New area where new writing is featured. If that area isn't serving its purpose, let us know. Thanks for the feedback.

That's great. Now we can come here without interruption.

i was wondering where the top 20 went but now that expalns it:] i cant wate until the randam first liens are fixed because that always confused me when i cliked on it and it want a romance but thanks for all the work you are doing to fix the sit.

They should be fixed now. I just looked up and saw a Fantasy listing.

That was the first thing I noticed when I got on today: where the heck is the Top 20? But yeah, I can totally understand why you're taking it off. I never really understood how you were put on the list anyway.

Well done and thank you for having such a wonderful site!!!

Thanks!

When I first joined Booksie I always thought that to be on the Top 20 was the greatest thing ever to happen. But then as the months passed by, I began to notice that anyone could get up there-- as long as they had received a like it vote... or had been getting a lot of reads.

The Top 20 was both a good thing and a bad thing. But I understand that you got rid of it.

Sometimes when I come to this site... I look at my writing and I'm all like... 'wow, I'm actually published...' And then I'm really happy, and all the comments from all my fellow booksians help me become a better writer... so as I've actually learned more on this site than I've learned in my english class this past year.

Booksie is so awesome-- I hope that you continue to evolve it in as many cool ways as you can:). And I don't know... perhaps there could be somewhere on this site where there could be a place where we can give ideas on what other (appropriate) things would make this site even more awesome. I don't know-- maybe we already have such a place for comments and such. But I don't know it would be cool to know other people's ideas on stuff. But that is only an idea:).

Lot's of special chocolate to you,

Ghiradelli Girl.

You can always leave a comment on my page. But maybe we'll create a better place. We definitely want to hear your thoughts and ideas. A lot of what we do is based on the feedback we get from the site's members.

that's cool ...really great...

i have one suggestion though, Can the home page be modified to feature new writings and articles or entries with a purpose ....and not a random selection...or the entry which is different...

and more writers get a chance to get featuresd on home page and everyone should get a chance...some of the writers are always there...and others go unnoticed...some writings are so baseless, still they place even though they have one or two reads and no likes...

That;s only one suggestion...

I am happy that TOP 20 is removed...caused my laptop to shut down as well....

needless to say, you have united us all and you are also a part of our lives now....

i am logged on to booksie every single second i get...

kinda sad the top 20 is off i loved that feature and i was on it for the past few weeks and i got sooo excited when i was :( I hope you bring it back!!! Seriously I really want it back I checked booksie all the time to see where I stood on the top 20. It made me feel good when I was on it, and it showed me good things to read if I wasn't on it. Please try to bring it back, BUT i can't wait for the new features :)

wow ok. i didn't even notice the top 20 was missing until a friend brought it to my attention. haha.

i love the idea of being able to look up specific writers. i've always wanted to do that when someone reccommends a writer to me. i've found it to be a hastle getting to them, but now it will be much easier.

i have on suggestion. i remember when i first joined booksie the new writing was displayed on the homepage and it showed the pictures that went with it. i honestly really liked being able to see the pictures. it would draw my eye to certain stories - in fact it would just draw me into the new writing section, whereas now, i kind of skim past it since theres nothing big and bold about it to catch my attention.

perhaps bringing pack the pictures that went with the writing for the new writing section?

thanks booksieguy for all the upgrade ^^

Yes, we've heard that a lot and will be looking into ways to better feature New work. Thanks for the feedback.

i must say i liked the top 20. it shows hard work and was really helpful to me....It made me want to keep writing and it made me want to improve. i'm a little dissapointed its off. It just doens't feel right without it at all.

Posted: Jul 9, 2008

It's still there just in the Popular sections now. The same criteria that was used to select the Top 20 is now used to determine which work is featured in the popular sections. We'll be making some changes to Popular soon to make it an even better way to discover new work across the site.

I wish the group good luck ^^

Well, I did like when my story was Top 1 for a little while, above all the erotica stories. But i wont miss it; since all the other stories were(most) erotica in there. What still gets me is that after a while your stories become lost and forgotten, but we really cant help that, the old had a chance to live. Ill be looking up at the Random first lines from now on, hoping to see my stories :D Ty for the changes

hi! bg. these changes r welcome and a big YO! to u all. i've a suggestion here. apart from the nine genres mentioned, could u add the following too:

1. autobiography, memoir, spiritual autobiography
2. biography
3. diaries, journals, letters
4. electronic literature
5. fable, fairy tale, folklore

the above genres r an integral part of literature. no classification is complete without them.

u deserve all the kudos in bringing about the improvisations. hope this'll be an on-going process. lol. ;-)

Thanks for the feedback. We'll look into the genres you mentioned. Improvement is definitely an on-going process.

Thank you Booksie(guy) for taking Top 20 off. It has been just the same people on there for months now. And I would just like to say thank you. Top 20 was a very judgemental thing, I must say. Thank you.

hey thanks for that, i was a bit confused. i love the site and i noticed it was crashing alot. is there any reason that I cant get the computer to format any of my writings? thanks so much!- rachel

Posted: Jul 10, 2008

Author Comment:

If you're using the Safari browser on a Mac the formatting may not work. Download Firefox and it should be a lot better. If it still doesn't work, contact us.

Thanks. What a bonus! You appear to have stopped the crashing and the slightly annoying message: "site down for maintenance." At the same time, you have eliminated, what was at one time for me, an ego-trap. I was logging on to see my Top 20 rise and fall; rather than writing, or living.

For finding things to read i like to scroll through the new section and read works that have just now been posted. I didn't like it when the default was changed to Newly Popular. If we read and comment on new work, rather than popular work all of the time, it can help those of us who are new to the site or those of us who no longer want to play the poularity game. And much of that work is worthy of our consideration.

So, thanks again for the great improvements to an already wonderful site.

I agree with Alice re the new writing - it should be more prominent and have the little picture with it if that is possible. I really think it needs to draw the eye more to encourage readers of new writers and new writing. Booksie is wonderful though. Will be an improvement not having a Top 20 in my view.

Thanks for the feedback.

I do miss the top 20, but I miss that annoying "site down for mantience" thing even less! Where can this popularity index be found?

Posted: Jul 11, 2008

Author Comment:

Under Read, every genre and type shows the most popular work for Today, Last 7 days, Last 30, etc. It is in essence the Top 20 for every category on the site. It's why we thought the Top 20 was redundant.

Thanks!Looking forward to the updates!

I'm so glad you guys are working as hard as you do. This website is quite an enjoyable experience for me.

Can we list only the newest stuff on the Home page? The only things on there week after week are more installments in books nobody reads and random pick lists with no criteria?

Showcase the new writers and their submissions. Showcase old writers who ask to be featured and have received feedback from their peers.

GREAT JOB!

We'll look into the New message bug. I've noticed it also.
Thanks.

i'd like to make a suggestion ^^
i got this idea last night when i was replying to a comment.
the commenter gets approx 1000 words for their comment. the reply-er gets approx 500 words. last night after receiving a very long comment that nearly reached the word limit, i went to reply and found that i couldn't say as much as i wanted to. it was for a poem that needed much explanation, and so when i tried to offer an explanation, i couldn't explain everything b/c i was limited on the amount i could type.
so

is there any chance that you think you can give the reply-er a bigger limit instead of just 500 or so words?
i'd really appreciate it very much. i've come across this several times before where i reach the limit and have to go through and cut certain things out that are still important to say.

just an idea ^^

Posted: Jul 18, 2008

Author Comment:

Yup. We can change the limit. You can also leave as many comments as you want on a piece so you could break it into two comments.

There are writings that seem to get extraordinary amounts of reads and remain as a "Featured Writing" for weeks at a time which is very boring! They may have 1300 reads (who knows where they all come from)and only 35 comments and 10 'likes' and I may have a write that has only 200 reads yet has 40 comments and 25 'likes' making it a more well liked piece actually but my piece will never make it as a "Featured Writing" There must be a better way to handle this, don't you think?

Posted: Jul 18, 2008

Author Comment:

Your piece can be on Featured Writing even if it doesn't make the homepage. We are looking into tweaking the homepage criteria but need to be careful so that how a piece of chosen can't be easily gamed.

the sites home page doesn't seem to alternate from the featured writing it list when the site opens. is that the norm? it'd be cool to see other stuff up there

I've been noticing that, on profiles, for member's stories, they multiply. Like, for my story 'Seven Fairies of Power', there's not one link for the story with the picture and summary but, like, fifteen! All in a line. It's not supposed to be like that, is it? I've spotted it on other member's profiles/portfolios.

just wanted to THANK YOU for fixing the problem of duplication of novels and the disappearance of old writings.
though i noticed its not all completely fixed. a lot of what i had under featured is there, but theres a decent chunk thats missing. and also just in the writing portfolio, older pieces of writing are missing. i have about 5 novels posted on booksie and only 1 shows up when viewing my page.

just thought i would bring this to your attention ^^ since the problem hasn't been completely fixed...

hope you can fix it soon :)

oh,, I am wondering if you have given any more thought into having the entire page of poetry/story etc shown when we click to answer comments?
it has always been difficult to answer comments on especially older writings because you can't remember what the poem was about. and then you have to bring up another page to have two on at a time jsut to answer the coment peoperly. you know also sinse we are doing so much more interpretation it would reeally come in handy to have the poem right there, and along with the other comments.
maybe its just me but I surely can't remember one poem from the next anymore LOL. and they often refer to this stanza or that staza you know? please HELPPPPPP lol!

Ah yes, I remember this suggestion. It's on the enhancement list so hopefully it's something that will come up soon. I can't make any promises though because just when we want to release a bunch of user features, something breaks that has to be fixed. Such is the nature of a growing website. Thanks again!

It's dissapointing to see it go, but if I can get onto my profile, thats what counts to me. Everytime the site crashed, I thought I was going to lose my work, thankfully I didn't, but I trust booksie to keep it safe for me. If booksie thinks it is the best choice to remove it then it was a good move. From what I've herd, and with my lack of knowlage as to weather or not I have the full information, it seems like the best move. Hopefully in the future though, we'll find an easier way to keep the top 20, or rather bring it back. But in the mean time I am happy to have a place to keep my work. Thank you.
