Todd made me come with him into the Smoothie Shack. He paid for both our smoothies and we sat down at a booth. We talked for hours. My dad didn't know school was closed either, so it just mattered that I was home when I usually got home from school. A question suddenly popped into my head.
"Why IS school closed?"
"They found a mouse family of only one hundred mice in the cafeteria." That made me happy that I had always brought lunches to school. Wait a minute, I bought lunch one day. Could my sickness be caused by whatever mice put in food? That would make sense.
I decided that was my answer. I would probably get over it in a few days, right?
Wrong. I continued to be sick for another week. As me and Todd got closer, my daily beatings got harder. My father's anger grew everyday, and I wasn't sure why. Sometimes he come home drunk, and would hurt me so much, that I stayed home the next day because I couldn't move. My father never knew when I stayed home. He left in the morning at six and didn't come home until around seven in the evening. Sometimes he came home earlier than that, sometimes later. I hoped I wouldn' t be caught staying home.
Soon, my dad decided to hire another babysitter. This made my heart beat faster, thinking of the pain the last one gave me. He was going out for the night and wouldn't be home before morning. When he left, the pain inside me was worse than when my father beat me.
There was a knock on the door. I looked through the peephole, and there was a girl about seventeen standing there cracking gum. I opened the door. She said hi and asked if she could come in. She reached out her hand for me to shake it.
"I'm Leila." I shook it. Leila had black hair, though it looked dyed. She had four piercings in her ear. She looked weird. Leila wouldn't hurt me, would she? After that, she asked what I wanted to do.
We played tons of board games and watched lots of movies. During the middle of one movie, I felt sick again. I ran to the bathroom and puked. Leila ran into the bathroom and gasped.
"How long have you been sick?" I told her I'd been sick about a month. I told her how I thought that it was from mice poisening or something. She shook her head the entire time.
Leila sat me down on the couch, and made me lay down. She went and got some soup and a thermometer. I had no temperature. I told her it was an off and on kind of sickness. Just then she had this weird twinkle in her eye. She asked about some other symptoms. I told her all that had gone on in the past month. I trusted Leila. I really trusted her.
"I might have some bad news for you." I asked her what and she said,"Leah, I think your pregnant."
